We relate to you, [O Muḥammad], the best of stories in what We have revealed to you of this Qur’ān
although you were, before it, among the unaware.
Surah Yusuf, 3
Consoling Companion: Tafseer Surah Yusuf is a guided 16-week mentorship through the Qur’an’s most powerful stories to understand our journey, our hardships, and how to remain firm amidst the storm
This course explores Surah Yusuf ayah by ayah, revealing its meaning, depth, and lived relevance, so we can begin to see our tests, delays, and hopes as part of a greater plan for our lives through the lens of the best of stories (Ahsan Al Qasas). Insha'Allah, this will strengthen our roots to withstand the hardships of life without being uprooted.
إِنَّهُۥ مَن يَتَّقِ وَيَصْبِرْ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا يُضِيعُ أَجْرَ ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ
“Indeed, he who has taqwa of Allah and is patient, then indeed, Allah does not allow to be lost the reward of those who do good.”
— Surah Yusuf, 90
A Consoling Companion on Your Journey
A form of healing that comes through companionship in the moments that are hardest to carry.
Calamities do not always come one at a time. They can arrive without warning and strike again before we have even recovered from the first. We strive to heal our illnesses, repair broken relationships, and rebuild careers or businesses, yet in the midst of these hardships, we often fail to notice that our iman is also being worn down.
When we think of healing, we often think of the body, or perhaps the diseases of the heart and spiritual illness. But the Qur'an heals something even deeper. It speaks to the moments in life we cannot fully explain: the betrayal we did not expect, the delays we do not understand, the hardships that feel unjust, and the waiting that feels endless. These are the places where words often fall short, yet they are the very places the Qur'an reaches.
And among all the surahs of the Qur'an, Surah Yusuf offers a unique kind of healing. It does not come in the form of commands or direct answers. Instead, it unfolds as a journey through the darkness of the well, through the painful separation, through accusation and unjust imprisonment, and through waiting, a path that at times can feel like a lifetime of suffering. Yet by the end of that journey, what once felt like loss is revealed to have been preparation all along.
Just as Prophet Yusuf عليه السلام endured hardship after hardship, each one shaping who he would become, we see similar patterns in the lives of great scholars such as Imam al-Bukhari رحمه الله.
As a child, he lost his father, a painful absence that drew him closer to what remained of his legacy, his books. Through them, he developed a deep connection to knowledge from an early age.
He was also tested with blindness in his childhood. His mother turned to Allah in sincere dua, and his sight was restored. Yet even that period became a training ground for his memory, sharpening his ability to absorb and retain knowledge in a way that would later distinguish him.
Through these early trials, Allah was preparing him for what he would become: one of the most renowned scholars in Islamic history, and the compiler of the most authentic collection of hadith after the Qur'an.
Every part of his story had meaning.
لَّقَدْ كَانَ فِى يُوسُفَ وَإِخْوَتِهِۦٓ ءَايَـٰتٌۭ لِّلسَّآئِلِينَ
“Indeed, in the story of Yusuf and his brothers there are lessons for all who ask.”
— Surah Yusuf, 7
When Surah Yusuf Became My Consoling Companion
Last year, Allah tested me in a way I had never experienced before. It was not a single trial, nor something outwardly visible. It was layered. One hardship followed another, arriving before the previous one had settled. There was loss of health, wealth, and relationships, accompanied by increasing strain, uncertainty, and emotional weight, until it felt as though the ground beneath me was no longer steady.
I was striving to manage what was in front of me, to endure, to push forward. But quietly, over time, my iman was being worn down. Not in a way that removed my belief, but in a way that made it harder to hold on with the same strength.
It was then that I remembered that Surah Yusuf was revealed during what is known as Aam al-Huzn, the Year of Sadness, as a source of consolation for the Prophet ﷺ.
I did not turn to it as something to study. I turned to it as something to console me. And so I returned to it daily, for months, until a deeper need grew within me, a need not just to recite it, but to truly understand it.
It was in the midst of that grief that I reached out to Sheikh Reda Bedeir, remembering that I had studied Tafseer Surah Yusuf with him 16 years earlier. I wanted to know if he had written anything on its tafsir and tadabbur, something I could hold onto during that time.
But I came to realize that what I needed was not something to read on my own. I needed to be guided through it again, ayah by ayah, with reflection and application to my life. And so I invited Sheikh Reda to teach Consoling Companion: Tafseer Surah Yusuf, as a means of seeking healing for my own heart through the Qur'an.
Throughout this journey, between preparing the course and navigating my own moments of grief, there were times of deep exhaustion and despair. Yet within it all, there were also moments of hope, dreams that brought reassurance and glimpses of relief, anchoring me and helping me remain firm through the stages of formation.
We all need support that strengthens our roots and repairs the wounds left by storms before they turn into cracks in our foundation.
Why Hardship Is Part of Life's Journey
What if the difficulties you and I are facing are not interruptions, delays or redirection…
but part of what Allah is using to shape who we are becoming?
Most of us grow up believing that a good life is one free of hardship. We expect ease, clarity, and steady progress. So when difficulty enters our lives, it feels like something has gone wrong.
But the Qur’an teaches us something very different. Life was never meant to be free of hardship. It was designed with it. Tests, delays, loss, and uncertainty are not interruptions to the journey, but they are part of the journey itself.
These moments are not without purpose. Through them, Allah refines a person, shaping their patience, polishing their character and honing their strengths.
What we often perceive as setbacks are, in reality, stages of becoming. It is through hardship that a person is transformed into who they were always meant to be. A stronger heart. A more grounded soul. A servant who knows Allah not only in ease, but in difficulty.
And yet, this life was never meant to be the place of complete ease. No matter how much we strive, there will always be moments of pain, uncertainty, and longing. Because this world is not the final destination.
Our real life is the one with no sadness, no grief, no fear, only peace, contentment, and nearness to Allah. A life where every hardship endured is finally understood, and every moment of patience is met with eternal reward.
What Makes Consoling Companions: Tafseer Surah Yusuf Different
The Unique Components of this Course:
Led by a Scholar, Guided with Care: This course is taught by Sheikh Dr. Reda Bedeir, a Professor at Al-Azhar, known for his ability to bridge deep tafseer and Arabic linguistics with the lived reality of the believer, transforming not just how we understand the Qur’an, but how we live with it.
Recitation Before Explanation: Each session begins with the recitation of the ayat, allowing the heart to receive before the mind begins to reflect. Students will also be given Qur’an homework before each class, encouraging them to read or listen to the ayat in advance, so they arrive prepared, connected, and ready to engage more deeply with the lesson.
Deep Tafseer, Made Accessible: You will journey through Surah Yusuf ayah by ayah, exploring classical tafseer, context, and meaning in a way that is both rooted in scholarship and relevant to your life today.
Tadabbur - Reflecting on the Deeper Lessons: Beyond explanation, you will be guided to reflect: What is Allah teaching through this ayah? What does it reveal about hardship, patience, trust, and divine wisdom? What lessons can we extract?
Focus on Key Arabic Words: Certain words in the Qur’an carry oceans of meaning. You will explore key Arabic terms within the surah, unlocking layers of understanding that are often missed in translation.
Life Mentorship Through the Qur'an: This is not knowledge for the mind alone. You will be guided to apply what you learn to your own life, your hardships, your waiting period, your questions, so the Qur’an becomes something you live with, not just learn about.
A Guided Community Experience: Through a dedicated WhatsApp group led by Ustadha Aiman, you will not walk this journey alone. You will have space for reflection, questions, and shared insights — creating a sense of companionship as you move through the surah together.
